Arsinoitherium

The Arsinoitherium is a mammal that is extinct and existed between 37 and 29 million years ago in the late Eocene era. It was a massive herbivorous animal that wandered Africa’s ancient woods. The animal was given the name “Arsinoitherium” in honour of Queen Arsinoe II, a Hellenistic Egyptian monarch; the name comes from the Greek words “Arsinoe” and “therion,” which mean “Arsinoe’s beast.”

The Arsinoitherium was an odd-looking yet intriguing monster. Its huge bulk was three metres in length and two tonnes in weight. Large, horn-like projections on its head—which were really extended nasal bones—were what made it most unique. Like those of contemporary rhinoceroses, these horns were most likely used for show or defence.
